Lithia Springs, GA 30122 #4
Lithia Springs, Georgia takes up a mere 2.2 square miles out of Douglas County's total 200 square miles. It is a small unincorporated area that as of the 2010 census had 15,491 persons residing there. It is home to Sweetwater Creek State Park where you can hike on 9 miles of trails, fish in the George Sparks Reservoir, play on the playground, geocache and have a picnic. The remains of the New Manchester Textile Mill are also located here. This mill was built before the Civil War and was destroyed by Sherman's troops because it was known to make supplies for the Confederate Army.
Lithia Springs is not a major city in Douglas County and is only a few blocks from my home. The grocery store that I go to on a weekly basis is in Lithia Springs. In 2011 my daughter, niece and I visited Sweetwater Creek Park and went on the New Manchester History Hike. It's a 1 mile hike that was very easy to navigate and was led my a tour volunteer. The views were amazing and the remnant of the mill was was a great site to see. This is also where I learned that I actually like to hike (providing I can pull my lazy bones off of my couch) and history is sort of cool.
*Lithia Springs is named after an actual spring that ran in the area that contained Lithium Carbonate. It was well know to have healing & therapeutic properties
*Lithia Springs was founded in 1882
*In 1887 Judge Bowden bough the springs & started bottling and selling its waters as "Bowden Lithia Springs Water"
*In 1887 a resort named "The Sweetwater Hotel" opened in Lithia Springs, Georgia
*The resort & the springs were so poular that Mark Twain, & Presidents Roosevelt, Mckinley, Taft & Cleveland all made the trek to Lithia Springs
*In 1888 the Piedmont Chautaqua Institute was self improvement was opened in Lithia Springs
*In 2001 the city charter for Lithia Springs was dissolved and it became an unincorporated area of Douglas County

All Over the map
Car: CHECK
Gas: CHECK
Map: CHECK
Itinerary: CHECK
Budgeted Money: CHECK
This is the roll call for my day trips while I'm on my "Georgia City Challenge". These 5 things will get me all over the state map and back home again. . Life isn't really predictable and neither is this challenge and that's why I will (try to) have an outline of day trips a month or two in advance but in the event of an unplanned opportunity for a day trip arises as long as I can get 5 CHECKS then off I go. For instance, I had no intention of going to Atlanta (Buckhead area) this week but when an appointment popped up I decided to schedule a little day trip into my day and boy am I glad that I did. I was able to see a new side of an area of town that I haven't been to in years. After navigating my way through Buckhead's major arteries rather effortlessly I can't believe I let the fear of leaving my comfort zone keep me away from such a vibrant hub of Atlanta. I had 4 free hours and I was able to pack in a good time for both my daughter & I (more about the trip in the upcoming weeks). So with that being said I'm going to start using the term day trip or day tripping.
Day Trip: A visit to a tourist destination or attraction from your home & returning home that same day. My trips will normally be a 1 day event. It could be a few hours or an occasional (special) sleep over.
There are 59,425 square miles in the state of Georgia and 601 cities, that's a whole lot of ground to cover. So to keep my embers burning and my curiosity piqued in my home office I have maps of Georgia starting to cover all of my walls. I have:
*a huge map of Georgia thanks to the Georgia State Transportation
*a Hospitality Hwy map
*a map of all the museums & galleries in Georgia
*a Georgia's guide to the Civil War map
*a Metro Atlanta map
These are for inspiration and to remind me that every city has a little something that it needs to be remembered for. When I think about my next day trip destination why would I be strict or have a deadline for my challenge but instead be like a leaf in the wind and go where the inspiration carries me even if it's all over the map.

Happy Humpty!
Gratitude & Appreciation.
One of the worst regrets we can have in our life is not for the wrong things we did..
but,
for the right things we could have done, but we never did.
